New West @ Maple Ridge

by Barb (text and photos © Barbara K. Adamski)

Well, now, I’m not sure what to think. I was turning into a bit of a Burrards fan this season. Or so I thought. No, I didn’t want them to beat the Bellies. That’s just silly. Still, I was beginning to really respect the team, and as you know, have always thought highly of Ron Schibild. Heck, I even thought that Maple Ridge’s Planet Ice was a great place to watch a lacrosse game. Nowhere else can you sit so close to the players that you can hear what they say to each other, see their facial expressions, and smell their sweat (not that I’m into smelling their sweat…). Plus, Maple Ridge has some serious fans, which is always nice to see (and sometimes a bit rare in this league).

But all that started to change when the Burrards came to town on Tuesday. It was a fantastic game. It was a clean game. Both games gave it their all, and even though the Bellies lost, I thought it was one of the better games they played all year. Still, the negativity in the stands was palpable. There was something about the energy emanating from the Maple Ridge cheering squad that made we uncomfortable going into tonight’s game. But that’s not what started to change my opinion of the team. What changed it for me was the fact that after a great and very fair game, the Burrards marched off to the dressing room yelling “F— you, New West.” Wow, to win (narrowly, mind you) and still be so unsportsmanlike.

And now, after tonight’s game (which the Bellies won handily, I might add), I have no respect for the Burrards (okay, maybe still a little for Schibild). I understand the desire to fight, and for the most part I’m perfectly fine with a lot of what goes on during a heated contest. But I think the Burrards realized tonight that they’re physically and mentally nowhere near the team that the Salmonbellies are, so they decided to let their inner thug out. I guess they figure they stand a better chance of making it through to the Mann Cup if they maim their opponents.

But even more irritating than the players’ shenanigans were the actions and attitudes of the bench. The Burrards’ coaching crew is so abusive that even the floor mopper walked out on them. And to the staff who took his place? Squirting water from your water bottle at Bob Salt is rather childish.

I don’t think the Burrards have what it takes to be a WLA champion team, let alone a Mann Cup winner. And even if they do manage to somehow make it through to the national championship, they certainly won’t have me rooting for them.

Kudos to Bellies Cliff Smith, Tyler Richards, and Jordan Hall for taking third, second, and first stars of the game and kudos to the rest of the team for all you do for your fans. There’s a reason you have such a loyal following.

A pet peeve

by Barb (text and photos © Barbara K. Adamski)

For several years now, it has bothered the heck out of me that people write “Salmonbellie” instead of “Salmonbelly” when referring to a single player of the New Westminster Salmonbellies or when using the noun attributively, as in “the Salmonbelly logo.” We don’t write “belliebutton,” do we? I’m sure it’s because lacrosse players, executives, and most fans aren’t into grammar and spelling like I am. (And who can blame them?)

Even Wikipedia has noted the odd spelling. They are, of course, a lot more diplomatic about it than I am, saying, “Curiously, the name is never spelled with a ‘y’ even when one writes about an individual ‘Salmonbellie.’”

Curious indeed. But there is one place you’ll see Salmonbelly with a “y”—right here on this blog. Wikipedia never gets their facts right.

Here’s a photo I forgot to upload earlier. It’s Curtis Manning’s second-period goal, which saw the Bellies tie it up at 5.

Can’t get enough lacrosse this weekend?

by Barb (text and photos © Barbara K. Adamski)

Check out the minor lacrosse provincials. Bantam boys’ provincials started yesterday and go until July 12 in Richmond, while girls’ (all levels) start today in Port Moody and go until the 12th as well. There’s some great young talent out there!

Photos from last night—Thunder vs. Salmonbellies

by Barb (text and photos © Barbara K. Adamski)

Below are a few shots from last night’s game at the Langley Events Centre. After you finish looking at the great plays, let your eyes wander to the empty stands. It’s rather sad that there are so few Thunder supporters in Langley. It’s a good thing so many Salmonbellies fans make the trek to away games.

The Thunder are a great team, and their arena is fantastic. But I think they (and some of the other teams in the league) have to work on their PR a bit. The whole WLA suffers when local folk don’t support their team.

Oh, and in case you’re wondering, the Bellies beat the Thunder 14 to 11 in regulation play. But don’t let the score fool you. The game was very close. Thunder had a 5–2 lead at the end of the first (with 22 shots on net compared to just 6 for the Bellies!), and the teams were tied at 8 at the end of the second.

Summer lacrosse camps

by Barb (text and photos © Barbara K. Adamski)

Looking for summer lacrosse camps on the Lower Mainland and in the Interior? Check out Wild West Lacrosse. Three of the instructors are New Westminster Salmonbellies Jordan Hall, Curtis Manning, and Cliff Smith, and the fourth is trainer Josh Neumann of Stay Fit Anywhere.

According to their website, Wild West helps kids accomplish their goal, “whether it is to play junior ‘A’, WLA, NCAA, NLL, MLL or for team Canada.”

Happy Canada Day!

by Barb (text and photos © Barbara K. Adamski)

What better way to spend Canada Day than watching our national summer sport on the wooden floor at Queen’s Park Arena. Making it even better was the Bellies’ overtime win against the Adanacs.

Matt Roik played a fantastic game overall. He slacked off a wee bit in the first period, allowing the Adanacs to take a 6–3 lead, but he more than made up for it in the second, when he completely shut out the As. Nick Rose had a strong game for the Adanacs as well. He too almost had a second-period shut-out, but at 18:59, Kevin Lunnie (from Craig Conn and Alex Tuura) thwarted that plan. Not long after, with just a few seconds left in the second period, Curtis Manning received a pass and rushed up to take on Rose with a clear shot and no Adanac defence in sight. The Bellies’ bench, for some reason, figured that rather than a goal, a time-out would be the better option, so the Bellies ended up with just one point in the second period and were still trailing by two. Honestly, what were they thinking?

In the third period, Roik got a five-minute penalty for unnecessary roughing, but I didn’t see it (literally) so can’t comment. I did, however, see the Adanac goalie push a player unnecessarily, but I guess it was necessary enough to avoid a penalty. There’s no question the ref saw it. He just misinterpreted it, I guess. I sure wish there were more consistency in calls in the WLA. In any case, by the end of the third the game was tied at 8–8.

Midway through overtime, the Adanacs got their ninth. Shortly after, Darcy Cummings picked a great time to get his first WLA career goal, tying it up once again. Sean Robinson and Jamie Floris each add one, making the final score 11–6 for the Bellies.

I’m quite miffed that both Cliff Smith and Rory Smith ended up with a one-game suspension for the incident on June 26, especially since the Adanac involved in the fracas, Mark Phillip (who also got a game misconduct last game), didn’t get one. And the fact that Phillip left the Adanacs’ bench to fight in front of the Bellies’ bench indicates a high level of intent and involvement. Phillip was equally aggressive tonight, getting five minutes for checking from behind against Ian Hawskbee, throwing him into the boards after Hawksbee took a shot, and getting away with a couple of other unsportsmanlike incidents, one of which happened directly in front of the ref and only a couple of feet away.

All in all, though, it was a great game to watch, although I’m finding all of these OT games rather stressful. I can’t imagine what it’s like for the players.
